real friendship in weather fair or foul. It is one of my top movie picks of all time! Read full review This movie is a winner through and through. The movie actually has four plots going on: (1) the friendship between Lillian and Julia as girls and as adults with the accusation that they might be lesbians by one of the other characters, (2) the rise of Lillian as a playwright to Broadway for "The Children's H our" (incidentally about the untrue accusation of lesbianism), (3) the most exciting train ride through France and Germany to deliver some hidden money to Julia, and (4)Lillian's relationship to Dashiell Hammett, her tutor, her adviser, and her lover.Īnd to boot, we see a gushing Meryl Streep make her film debut as a brunette. They have nothing in common except their love of making up stories together and just being together.Īs an adult Lillian Hellman is a frustrated playwright under the tutelage of Dashiell Hammett (Jason Robards), while Julia is off in Vienna studying medicine right at the time of the rise of the Nazis. Jane plays the nervous, insecure Jewish friend (Lillian Hellman) of the rich and bold Christian Julia (Vanessa Redgrave). This is my favorite Jane Fonda film even though she won the Academy Award's Best Actress for two others. The problem with that is that for the first part of the film there are no laughs at all. What happens next? Well, the younger sister lures the man across the road into the house on the pretext of fixing her bike the serial killer has his feel nailed to the floor crucifixion fashion, and when he frees himself, you have to think this is some kind of bizarre satire, because he is as blithely nonchalant as when his victim escaped when in the real world he would have been in desperate need of medical treatment. The implication is they are like this because they were sexually abused by their own father they appear to hate men, or at least any man who gives them the eye, which is most red-blooded males over the age of about 14 because they are both strikingly attractive. At this point we are not far enough into the film for the cops to arrive, and they don't, rather her sister does the two are more than sisters, they are a killer couple. Seizing her opportunity, she escapes from his clutches and against the odds overpowers him. When she returns to her vehicle he is waiting inside for her, kidnaps her, takes her to his lair, brands her, then makes the mistake of not murdering her then and there. Her intuition was right because he is a serial killer whose MO is to brand his victims with the letter X using a red hot iron. ![]() What could go wrong? For whatever reason she has a bad feeling about her date, makes her excuses and leaves. ![]() A young woman means an attractive, muscular guy in a chat room.
